Gold statue of man holding gold statue

Talking Statue.

Imagine you are sat in a square waiting for your mother underneath a statue. What if it suddenly spoke to you? How would you react? What would you think? What would it say? What would it want?

STUCK?   Try this story starter:
Of course she was late. Mum is always late. Whenever she says, “I’m just popping to the shop for a few things,” it’s never a few. And so I find myself sat on a cold ledge beneath a boring grey statue in the middle of a dull empty square. There is nothing worth looking at. There is nothing good about this place.
I hear a cough. But it is not me and there is no one else who could have made it. How strange. I look up at the face of the statue above me. It has a chiselled chin, crooked hat and long wavy moustache. I joke, “I suppose that was you?”

STUCK?   Try this story starter:
I should have been suspicious when the genie laughed. All I had done was wish for a pet but that had made the genie laugh out loud, louder than he had done before. My mum had warned me about genies. They have a habit of playing tricks on people. Little did I know what was to follow.
There was a big flash of light and a puff of smoke and the genie was gone; off to enjoy his freedom. And I was left with a large box with holes in it. Air holes. And it seemed to be making a noise.

The Invisibility Cloak.

What if you got an invisibility cloak? What would you get up to? Where would you go? How would feel?  What might go wrong?

STUCK?   Try this story starter:
Uncle Mortimer had been a strange chap who was always trying out new ideas, inventing new things. And his house reflected that. Rooms full of cogs and gears attached to different sized boxes; vast collections of objects found on walks like rocks, sticks and even a dead pigeon; jars of liquids of numerous colours, some swirling, some almost a mist; and a room we were not allowed in. The Inventing Room. Of course, telling a nine year old you are not allowed in there meant Jamie was going to go in. And what a room. Papers and scrolls everywhere, on the floor, on the large desk in the centre of the room, and books lining the walls. It was a sea of paper. All except a wooden box sat on the desk on top of some papers.

I knew I shouldn’t have eaten that sweet I had found. It had looked a bit odd. A sort of greenish colour with a touch of yellow, and red lumps like crystal. My mother had always told me to not put things in my mouth. But, of course, I didn’t listen. In it went. And it tasted so good. Probably the best thing I’ve ever tasted.
