Poem: Utopia City

I will build in my city

green spires circling trees and grass
swallows nesting in the rooftops
fruit trees hanging from window baskets

I will build in my city

parks with hidden tunnels to secret places
cat cafes to sip tea and share a biscuit
floating platforms to dive from into the bluest water

I will build in my city

plastic free markets where food is free
warm beds to rest in spacious rooms
health care for all from birth to grave

I will build in my city

acceptance, tolerance and love
the friendly greetings of strangers
the kindly helping hands of neighbours

I will build in my city

me.

This came about because I have been thinking of my children and what will become of them in the future. I feel children have the power to make real change to the world. As you grow older, you can get stuck in your ways, and lose vision. Children are full of imagination and hope for the future.

Spell Binding.

Imagine your parents are wizards and witches and you are told never to go down to the cellar. What happens when you sneak down? What happens when you open their spell book?

STUCK?   Try this story starter:
We had always been told never to go down to the cellar, Fantasima and I, but like all kids told never to do something by their parents that just made you want to do it, to find out what all the fuss was about, what the big secret is. And our parents already had a fairly big secret. Dad is a Wizard (Grade 2) and mum a witch (Grade 1 with honours) so whatever was down there would be good.
It was their fault really. They shouldn’t have left us alone to go to a friends’ house for a coffee and cake. I know it was only for an hour but a lot can happen in an hour. It wasn’t my idea to go down there, I swear, it was Fantasima. But of course she would not get blamed, never the youngest.
Anyway, she had sneaked the key down and came to me and said, with that mischievous twinkle in her eye, waving the key before me, ‘What do you think?’

DID YOU KNOW? There is a book about a couple of children transported to another world called Narnia by magical rings. It is called The Magician’s Nephew by C.S.Lewis.

What is Write – 30?
Write – 30 is a daily activity where you write non-stop for twenty minutes then check and edit your work for 10 minutes. You will be asked to write about different subjects and in different forms.

The writing should be done on lined paper in pencil if possible. Edit and check the work in pen. If you don’t have paper and pencil, use what you can. Even a computer.

Finding it difficult? What you can do to help:

  • Always sit/work in the same place
  • Always use the same writing tools
  • Always turn the TV off
  • No talking – it distracts thinking
  • Always listen to the same piece of classical music when writing.
  • Always set yourself a goal: count the number of words. Try to beat that number the following day.

Perfect World.

What would your perfect world look like? What would be in it? How would the people behave? Where would everyone live? What would a normal day be like?

STUCK?   Try this story starter:
Lots of people have different ideas about what the perfect world would be like. If I was in charge, the supreme boss of Earth, then everything would be…
