Time Machine.

You have built a time machine. What year do you go to first? To the past? Visit the egyptians or King Henry VIII? Or to the future? What will happen there?

STUCK?   Try this story starter:
I fed a copy of ‘The History of the World’ into the machine’s reality matrix. It googled it hungrily. The neutron cortex was at full power. The machine was ready and waiting. I climbed on the seat.
But where to first? 1600? 1700? Or even 2030?
I couldn’t decide. There was only one thing for it. I pulled the randomiser. Now, it was any body’s guess.

What happens next?

The Tunnel.

You are walking in the woods when you come across this tree with a hole. Curious, you peer in. You discover a tunnel. Should you go in? You decide to risk it. What happens next?

STUCK?Try this story starter:
“I hate you!” I slammed the front door and stormed off. It wasn’t fair. My stupid parents wouldn’t let me go to Karen’s party just because it was on a school night. I was going to miss the best party of the year.
I entered the old woods at the end of my street. It’s where I always go when I’ve had a bust up with them. I find it calming. Things don’t seem so bad when I’m there. Except this time it wasn’t working. So I kept walking until I came to a clearing I hadn’t come across before. Right in the middle was a twisted, gnared old tree. Maybe an oak? I don’t know such things. It had a hole at the base of the trunk, Curiousity got the better of me. It always does. I peered in. It seemed to be some kind of tunnel. I just had to go in.


What happens next?

Alien In The Bathroom.

It’s bath night. Your dad has run you a bath. You go to the bathroom to get in. You stop suddenly. There in the bath, splashing in the water, is a little purple alien. What happens next?

STUCK?   Try this story starter: 
“Jamie, bathtime,” called dad.
Reluctantly I left my computer game, Planetfall 7, and made my way to the bathroom. Best to get it over with. Suddenly, I was stopped in my tracks. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There, sat in my bath, playing with the bubbles and my favourite yellow duck, was a little purple alien.

The Doppelganger.

What if you entered your bedroom and you found an exact copy of you? And they were saying they were you! What would you do?

STUCK?   Try this story starter: I had snuck out the house to go to my girlfriend’s house. I was told not to as my parent’s think she is a bad influence. What do they know? Anyway, I climbed the tree up to my bedroom window and clambered in. I was shocked what I saw there. On my bed was an exact copy me. Same face, same clothes, same scar above the left eye from the time I tripped over the dog.
“Jamie, I’ve been waiting for you,” it said.

Meagical Journey.

You are stood on a towel in the bathroom that someone has dropped. Sighing about having to stay in yet again, you say, “If only I could go to somewhere else.” Suddenly, the towel rises up in the air with you on it. You fly out the window. Where do you go?

STUCK?   Try this story starter:
“It’s not fair being stuck in this house day after day!” Sarah yells.
“Sarah, be reasonable. Everybody has got to do it,” said mum.
“Well, I hate it!” Sarah goes into the bathroom and slams the door shut. It was her favourite place to go to get away from everyone. It was her only place to go with a house full of people. The only place she would be left alone.
Standing on a discarded orange towel, Sarah looked longingly out of the window.
“I wish I could go to a land of castles, princesses and knights. It would be so much better than here,” she sighed.
Suddenly, the towel rose into the air with her on it and …

Writing Trick 1: OSM

Often I get asked, “Oi, mister! How do I stop people falling asleep when they’re reading my writing?”
And I reply, “My name’s not Oi Mister.” Then I tell them about Writing Tricks. I’m going to introduce a few of them here.

1) Onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia is the sound things make. It’s how a writer lets reader know what a sound is exactly like. Common ones are things like: crash! bang! wallop!
But the real fun happens when you make some up of your own, such as Splurrgting!
That’s not all. You can play around with how they look on the page and so how the sound was made:

Here the sound is going from quiet to loud as if someone is getting more and more annoyed

and here it is like they were being noisy and were then told to quieten down. Both great fun and when a writer is having fun so is their reader.

2) Simile. Similes help a writer describe what something is like to a reader by describing something it is similar to with regards shape, colour, smell, size, behaviour, texture…Basically saying one thing is like something else.
You use the word like or as in a simile.
The best similes often match the genre or book type you are writing in. For example, these wouldn’t be out of place in a horror:

the ghost was as white as a bag of bones

the spirit’s face was pale  like bone

Although you can have fun writing unexpected similes:

The princess flicked her golden hair around her face as beautiful as a slug.

3) Metaphors. Metaphors are very similar to similes in that they help a writer decribe something to make it clearer to the reader. The key difference here is you are not saying something is like something else but it is something else.

A simple example is this:
the man ate like a pig  (Simile)
the man was a pig eating (Metaphor)

More complicated:
his eyes burned like flame (Simile)
his grin with eyes of flame 
(Metaphor)

So next time you are writing, why not try some of these tricks out but remember the most important thing: have fun with your writing and your reader will too.

the school PA charged the computer
went on Dateline
looking for a suitor

the teachers began to sing
skipping around
in a great ring

looking for ice-cream

the school nurse poured out  lotion
skidded across the floor
causing a commotion
